still life

The thing about Still Life that fascinates me, is that through deliberate selection and placement of objects I can compress and layer years of thinking into a cohesive message that the viewer can intuit in a single moment. Any visual medium has the ability to articulate relationships that are difficult to grasp. You sense and feel the truth sometimes when you can’t explain it. I am drawn to objects that have a history –The china doll missing its limbs, the moth wing torn asunder, the river polished arrowhead. Everything is connected. What we do in our lifetime will affect the future. I experiment with the “what if” and move objects around like pawns on a chessboard until they make sense. – Ed Lavino
