Northwest Manifest: Jackson Art in Regional Context

A talk and Q&A with Portland Art Museum curator Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson

At The Rose – Wednesday, August 1 – 5:30 p.m. – FREE

Culture Front is proud to team up with JH Public Art to welcome Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson, curator of the Contemporary Northwest Art Awards, for a special talk at The Rose, at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, August 1.

A curator at the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon, Laing-Macolmson will be in Jackson to do a studio visit with fiber artist Abbie Miller, one of 28 finalists for the prestigious 2013 Contemporary Northwest Art Award. Laing-Malcolmson will speak Wednesday evening about contemporary art in the five-state Northwest region (Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming) and what similarities in work or unique contributions Jackson-based artists are making.

When asked about the Northwest art scene, Laing-Malcolmson told The Oregonian: “It’s a really lively, multidimensional world, the art world here, and there’s a really exciting span of artists who are doing incredible work, artists who’ve been working here for years and upcoming experimental artists, too. The galleries and museums are supportive of each other here and in this five state region.”

Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson is the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Curator ofNorthwest Art for the Portland Art Museum. She is the former director of the Paris Gibson Square Contemporary Art Museum in Great Falls Montana, and she served 10 years as President of Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon.
